AmaPiano… The sound of Ilokishi

I know I haven’t put ink into the blog lately, but between full time employment, side hustling and being a mommy its hard to find the time.

For my “first in a while” post I want us to talk about “AmaPiano” a word that is on everyone’s lips lately. 

Back in the 90’s Kwaito was the sound of the hood, every where you went you’d hear awesome tunes by MDU, Thebe, TKZee and and and…. but the tune as changed. while we will forever love and appreciate Kwaito, we have moved to a different beat knows as AmaPiano, a smooth jazzy melody mingled together with a house beat and repetitive GONG GONG sound. 

I was very reluctant at first being a deep house head and all until one day at local Shisanyama in my hood the DJ played Spirit for Bantu Elements “AmaPiano Volume 1” and it was love sound.

What makes Amapiano more special to me is the fact that they were born ekasi lam’ , eKatlehong by a duo called MFR SOULS.

Before Kabza became uMsholozi we had Tumelo Mabe and Tumelo Madondo who came together in 2011 and changed the game with a unique sounds that hadn’t been named yet, a lot of DJ’s soon adopted the sound and because of all the songs have a pianic key throughout the entire song they were all fused into a genre today know as “Amapiano” 

Today the genre has grown so much that there are hundreds of mixes on Sound-cloud and YouTube produced by various DJs, more that than the genre now comes with a unique dance style which only a few of a us can crack. 

Trace Urban Music is even running a competition where producers can submit their song in the hopes of winning a music video and becoming the Godfather yama Piano.
